Using the Excel SHEETS Function

The Excel SHEETS function will return the number of sheets in a reference.

To find the index number of a sheet in a workbook, use the SHEET function.

=SHEETS (reference)

Reference
Optional. A reference for which you want to find how many sheets it contains. The functions will return the number of sheets in the workbook that contains the function if the reference argument is blank.


Usage Notes

SHEETS will return the number of sheets in a reference workbook. The function includes all worksheets, including those that are visible, hidden, or very hidden. The function also includes other sheet types such as macro, chart, or dialog sheets. When reference isn't supplied, the function returns the number of sheets in the workbook in which the function was entered.

If the reference argument is not valid, the function returns the #REF! error.
