Using the Excel PROPER Function

The Excel PROPER function will capitalize the first letter of a text string. The function also capitalizes any letter that follows a non-letter character. All other letters will be converted to lowercase.

=PROPER (text)

Syntax Breakdown

Required. A text string, a formula that returns text, or a reference to a cell containing text.

Usage Notes

PROPER will capitalize the first letter in a text string and any other letter following a non-letter character. Numbers and punctuation are not affected.

Letters that are already capitalized may be affected. For example =PROPER(reno, NV) would return Reno, Nv. While the "R" is correctly capitalized, the "v" is converted from upper to lowercase.
