Using the Excel N Function


The Excel N function converts a value to a number. For example, the function will convert TRUE to 1 and FALSE to zero (0).


=N (value)

Syntax Breakdown

Required. The value that should be converted to a number.

The following table shows how N converts different values:

Value is or refers to N returns
Number That number
A date in an Excel date format Serial number of the date
FALSE Zero (0)
Error value (#N/A, #REF!, etc.) The error value
Any other value Zero (0)

Usage Notes

The N function accepts a value and returns a number. Typically, this function is not needed as Excel converts values as needed. N exists primarily for compatibility with other spreadsheet programs.
