Using the Excel MEDIAN Function


The Excel MEDIAN function is used to return the number that is in the middle of a set of numbers.


=MEDIAN (number1, [number2], ...)

Syntax Breakdown

Number 1
Required. The numbers for which you want to find the median. Entries can be numbers, arrays, or references that contain numbers.

The function will also accept logical values (TRUE and FALSE) and numbers entered as text if they are typed directly into the list of arguments.

Number 2
Number 2 and subsequent number arguments are optional. The function can accept up to 255 numbers.

Usage Notes

MEDIAN finds the middle number in a set of given numbers. If an even number of values are supplied, the median is found by calculating the average of the two middle numbers.

The function will ignore text, logical values, and empty cells that are part of an array or reference. However cells with a zero value are included.
