ABS

Using the Excel ABS Function

Summary

The Excel ABS function returns the absolute value of a number. The absolute value is simply the number without a sign (i.e. a negative sign). When used, this function does not affect positive numbers and negative numbers will be turned positive.

Syntax

=ABS (number)

Syntax Breakdown

Number
The number argument is required in the ABS function. This is the number of which you want to find the absolute value. The output will always be a positive number.

Usage Notes

The ABS function returns the absolute value of a number, or the number's distance from zero. This means that all output will be positive values. ABS(-10) and ABS(10) both return 10.
